How Frequently Should My Residential Windows Be Replaced?

Living in a home with old windows is not the most optimal situation for a home owner. From the eye appeal to being energy efficient, getting new replacement windows can do wonders. But usually after how long, should you look into getting new windows? Do windows have a life expectancy?

The quality of window and environment that you live in also will change how long your windows can last. While the number of years is important, it is just the first sign that you should look into other aspects of your windows.

Can you here noises from inside that you never could before? When you walk past your window do you ever feel a draft, even when the windows are shut? Is the appearance of your home brought down just from your windows? Read our blog about when you should replace your windows to learn more.

Common Problems with Inexperienced Window Installations

The DLM Remodeling contractors have been working on window replacements for over 25 years. Our team has experience far and above many of the companies in the area. The window industry is so vast with inexperienced contractors and the results are showing up. When looking for a window replacement contractor or if you take this project on by yourself, you should be aware of some frequent problems that can happen. These fundamental errors could result in water leaks, air drafts, structural failures and more:

  1. Poor Caulking – Cleaning: Caulk is a general portion of installing windows. This is the stuff which seals everything together and maintains water and air tightness. This material must be extremely sticky to work properly. What we have seen is installers use caulk and apply it to dirty, unclean surfaces, which results in a poor bond.
  2. Poor Caulking – Tool Use: In order to caulk, most of the time you need to use a proper tool for them to stick. With the proper tools and technique, the result is a pleasing, concave surface. When done improperly, the surface is bumpy and uneven.
  3. Missing the Trim Seal: Many windows systems consist of the windows themselves plus a series of trim pieces. If these pieces become exposed to the outside, it is extremely important that they are sealed to the window. You can tell that your windows have been properly sealed if you can see caulk squeezing out of where the window and trim meet.

These are three out of many mistakes that we see from past window installations. There are more skilled techniques that we have left off the list, but we hope you get the point. It is just important that you choose a contractor with a good track record and ones that you can trust. For more information on window replacement, we would be happy to talk. Poor Windows after Buying New Home

Throughout the years, we have had a few new home owners come to us looking for a window replacement. Many of these people have been cheated during the buying process and didn’t inspect there windows correctly or even at all. Many of the problems our customers have include:

  • Completely worn out and old windows that rattle loudly.
  • Windows that are extremely drafty and bring cold and uncomfortable air into your home.
  • Windows that are difficult to open and close and others that just wont stay open.
  • Heavy set windows that can be extremely tedious and difficult to clean.
  • High set and outrageously high heating and air conditioning bills.

Reasons like these may not be easily noticeable and it’s why it’s critical to check the quality of your windows before purchasing. Buying a home in this condition can led to unneeded additional costs.

Be sure to save yourself the hassle and time of this process! If you encounter a situation where you are blindsided, DLM Remodeling is one of best in the business when it comes to new window replacements. Replacement Windows in Reading, MA

Older Windows bring down the look and feel of a home and truly run up heating and electricity bills. Brand new windows can make a house look new again and will remove any unwanted draft.

DLM & the home owners went with new Harvey “slimline” replacement windows. Below we have attached some before and after images of the screen porch. The porch being the first thing anyone sees when entering or walking past this home got a major upgrade with high quality replacement windows.
