Ideas For Window Treatments

After installing your beautiful, high quality windows with DLM Remodeling you need to take the following actions to make them look as good as possible from the inside. While our windows are extremely beautiful, there are things you can add that will aesthetically bring everything together with the decor inside.

There are so many different things you can do from curtains, drapes shutters and more! Window treatments come in so many different shapes and sizes but the worst thing you can do is leaving a huge bare spot open whether your windows sit. Over the years of working with replacement windows, we have accumulated some of the more popular window treatments.

window treatment plantPlants: Plants are extremely organic and beautiful and can work within a wide range of window types. They add that natural touch and only require a little watering here and there. Another bonus which doesn’t hurt is that they offer fresh oxygen to freshen up the air in your home.

Full-length curtains: Curtains come in many different, lengths, styles and colors but one more popular option that we see is full-length curtains. They are very helpful for bedrooms to block out the sun. Additionally a full-length curtain can make a window the anchor and main feature of a room while also making the window as a whole look taller.

Bench Seats & Pillows: If you have bay windows, a bench seat can be absolutely perfect. Along with your bench seat, a few well placed and organized pillows can make the worlds of difference. If your bench seat is wooden, then look into purchasing a custom cushion. It is an easy way with your pillows to transform this space into a magical one.

Signs That It’s Time To Upgrade Your Siding

For so many homeowners, there is a list of things that people are saving money away for home improvements. There always seems to be a “next thing” that you’re going to do with you home. One item we want to suggest and that often gets overlooked is siding. But, when should you check out the quality of your siding? Check out the signs below:

1.) Continued Painting: High quality siding has the ability to keep its color and shape for around 10 years. If you find yourself needing to continuously paint, it may be time to consider a replacement.

2.) Rotting & Warping: Looking around and examining the exterior of your home is a great way to see if there are any underlying issues. Before you go outside, grab a screw driver to help you investigate. One thing you should be looking out for is rotting boards, or warped siding. When you find siding which looks warped, take the screwdriver to poke around underneath. If you find that their is rotting, or soft spots, replacement siding may be your best bet.

3.) Holes: This may be a more obvious and easy to find issue, but look for any sized holes. These are often created by insects and can often allow unwanted water and friends into your home.

4.) Bubbles Inside: Siding of a home is designed to keep water outside of your house. If you notice that their are bubbles forming on your inside walls, this can be a sign that water has been trapped in your siding.

5.) Mold/Fungus Growth:  Mold and fungus growth on you siding may not be the end of the world for your siding but it’s important because there could be another underlying issue. Mold growth could be a sign that water has made its way inside your wall. If you notice this, look around to see what’s causing it.

6) Dry Rot: With the screwdriver that you have with you, walk around and lightly tap various sections of the siding. Doing this allows you to check for any dry rot before there are more visual signs that appear. Dry rot is so dangerous because all the rotting occurs beneath the surface until it eats away so much that the only think left is the exterior siding portion.

7) Growing Heating Or Cooling Bills: There could be a wide variety of reasons that your heating or cooling bill has skyrocketed but it’s important that you figure out why this is happening. Look at your roof, doors, windows, insulation and siding as anyone of these could be the reason for unwanted air entering and exiting your home.

Tips To Reduce Window Condensation

Window condensation isn’t something that all homeowners deal but for those that do, it can be very frustrating. Why is condensation building up on your windows and what can you do to fix it?

Condensation is simply water droplets that build up on either the inside or outside of the windows in your home. The cause of it is usually when warm, moist air comes into contact with a colder surface(your windows).

What Can I Do To Reduce Condensation On My Window?

  • Having air circulate through your home is a great way to fight condensation build up. Bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms that have high moisture levels will usually see the most condensation.
  • Be sure that your basement and attic are also very well ventilated. Built up condensation can also result is something worse… mold!
  • Opening your windows and blinds will help improve air flow. When the sun starts shinning down, this can also help remove any moisture build up.

Besides these easy tips, it is important that your windows are properly fitted into their frames and that they are also well insulated. Inexperienced or corner-cutting contractors can sometimes do these things. How to Pick the Right Paint Color for A Room

How many times have you wanted to paint a room but stop short in your tracks because you fear that you will choose the wrong color?  If you’re deciding on which colors to choose in your home, you may find the following tips helpful.  New to DLM Remodeling’s list of home improvement services, is interior painting.  Their highly trained technicians have the knowledge and tools to get the job done right.  Contact DLM Remodeling for a free in-home consultation and estimate, and finally get the home of your dreams!

When deciding on the perfect paint color for a room…

Consider the elements in the room – Flooring, rugs, furniture, and upholstery can all suggest a color direction, make the wall color the last thing you choose.  There are thousands of colors to choose from and it’s easier to find a wall color that matches a rug, than a rug that matches a wall color.

Consider the mood you want to set – Do you want the room to feel calm and peaceful, such as a bedroom, or do you want it to have an energizing vibe, such as a family room?  Deciding on the mood that you want to set in the room is a great place to start and will narrow down your color options.

Consider the size of the room – In smaller rooms, sticking to lighter colors will make them look bigger and create an open, airy feel.  Although, this doesn’t mean that the room has to be strictly white.  Paint a colorful accent wall, or tone it down with some darker furniture or accent pieces.

Take paint samples home – Home improvement stores often add extra lighting in their paint isles.  Make sure you know how the paint will look under the lighting conditions in your home.

Don’t examine a paint sample against a white wall – The way a color looks is affected by the colors surrounding it.  By comparing samples against white often causes them to appear darker, prompting many people to choose a lighter color.  Try comparing samples against furniture or flooring for a better perspective.

Check painted areas in natural AND artificial light – When testing out a paint on a wall in your home, make sure to view it at different times throughout the day.  The way a color may look in the morning in natural light, may look completely different at night in artificial light.

Take into account how your rooms flow – There should be cohesion between rooms that give way to one another.  Decide on a desired breaking point between each room before you start painting to create and even flow throughout your home.

Use a personal color viewer – This is an easy-to-use interactive color visualization tool that allows you to view how different colors will look in a room.  By uploading your own photos, or choosing a number of images available online, you can quickly go through thousands of colors to find the perfect one.

Invest in kid-friendly – If you have little ones in the house, consider using a high quality, washable, low-VOC paint, in a semi-gloss finish.  This will ensure for easy cleanup if your children decide to use the walls as their own personal canvas.

The overall decision on paint color is very personal.  Your home should reflect who you are and what you love.  As long as you pick colors that make you feel happy, you can’t go wrong.  Don’t be scared! Paint is not permanent and you can always change it!
