Tips for Surviving a Kitchen Remodel

kitchen remodel

Making the decision to remodel your kitchen is a big one. Whether you’ve decided to simply replace your appliances or are starting from the ground up, going without a kitchen for any period of time can be very frustrating. By preparing your home and your family for your kitchen remodel, the process will won’t be as overwhelming.

Set Up a Temporary Kitchen

Want to still be able to cook meals in your home but don’t want to enter the construction zone? Create a separate, temporary kitchen in another area of your home. If you’re unable to move your fridge into your temporary space, a mini fridge will do the job to keep the essentials during the renovation. Another appliance you’ll want to move into the temporary space is a microwave.

Be creative – if your remodel will be complete in a short period of time, plan to cook outside on the grill or order takeout instead of setting up a temporary kitchen.

Stock Up on Paper Plates & Plastic Utensils

Washing your serve ware and utensils in the bathroom sink can be a huge pain. In order to avoid this situation altogether, stock up on paper plates, bowls, and disposable coffee cups/drinkware as well as plastic utensils. Stockpiling these items is easy and you’ll use them in the future, so if you overbuy, it’s no problem! Once you’re done with them, simply recycle them.

Consider Your Pets

Construction in your home means loud noises, unfamiliar people, and messy spaces. Not all pets adjust to these types of changes, so be sure to consider how your pet might take to these changes. If you know they’ll have a hard time adjusting to this new sense of “normal”, board your pet during the renovation or have a friend or family member watch your furry friend.

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

Renovations can be frustrating and sometimes things come up that you haven’t planned for. Try not to get stressed out about it. Remember – you’re making big decisions and finally get to have the kitchen of your dreams!

Order as Much as Possible Pre-Renovation

The small details of your kitchen remodel are the ones that are going to take the longest time. When you start the design process, be sure to order as much before you get started with the renovation as possible – sometimes these things take a long period of time to be delivered (think 6-8 weeks!). Don’t forget about hardware, the backsplash, and any other small details.
